Community Currency

Is it possible to opt out of the monetary system as it exists in its current state today, where what is commonly considered "wealth" is increasingly being concentrated in the hands of the few? How could we use our skills and other things to decrease the need for the use of regular money as well as reduce consumption?

Our watchwords are, "Consume less, share more." As a first step, we joined our local "freecycle" community. One of us exchanged web building for home improvement. We see strong community bonds and relationships as the currency of the future (and really, the present!).
